New to Windows 10 build 18917 (20H1)

Windows subsystem for Linux 2

The most significant improvement in this release is undoubtedly the new Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 (WSL 2). WSL is the compatibility level for running Linux binary executables on Windows.

Microsoft announced the development of the next version last month. WSL 2 is based on the Linux 4.19 kernel, which uses technology created for Azure. Since the new version uses the real Linux kernel, WSL 2 can run ELF64 Linux binary files on Windows. This changes the way Linux binaries interact with Windows and the hardware on your computer. WSL 2 even supports launching Linux Docker containers, so virtual machines will no longer be required. The updated Windows subsystem for Linux 2 also received new commands.

New Delivery Optimization Settings

For users with very low internet connection speeds, setting the load adjustment as a percentage of the available bandwidth may be insufficient. This build adds a new option for bandwidth throttling, used in optimizing delivery, as an absolute value. You can set this separately for priority downloads or background downloads. Although these options already exist for IT professionals who use group policies or MDM policies, it is now available on the Settings > Update and Security > Delivery Optimization > Advanced Settings settings page.

Updates for Windows Ink Workspace

Microsoft combines the capabilities of Windows Ink technology. The updated Windows Ink workspace is smaller and has a direct link to the Microsoft Whiteboard application. Whiteboard includes an endless canvas, additional background images (graph paper and dark gray) to choose from, support for rainbow ink and several pages.

Narrator Improvements

Narrator continues to improve. Reading the data table has improved when navigating the table with navigation commands. The Narrator first reads the header data, then the cell data, and then the row / column position for that cell. In addition, Narrator now reads headlines only after changing headlines.

Major changes, improvements and bug fixes

Fixed an issue where some users encountered an error code 0x8007000E when loading an assembly due to high memory consumption.
Fixed an issue that prevented desktop users from using the “add a feature” option for the Features on Demand feature.
Fixed an issue where there was a delay when dragging Emoji and input panels.
Changes to solve the problem in which, if auto-hiding was set for the taskbar, launching the Start menu first hid the taskbar before opening.
Fixed a bug due to which the Start menu and taskbar became completely transparent on an additional monitor or when projecting.
Search in Explorer is now dark when used in a dark theme. There are still some problems with this, but they are in the process of being resolved, thanks to incoming user feedback.

Fixed an issue where the audio service could hang when shutting down, if
surround sound was turned on.

Known Issues

The first time you try to download this update, the process may fail with error code 0xc0000409.
For home releases, some devices may not see the message “Update installed” on the update history page and the update download percentage on the Windows Update page.
There are problems with old versions of anti-cheat programs used with games, when after upgrading to the latest builds of 19H1 Insider Preview, crashes can occur on the PC. We are working with developers on updating and fixing their software, and most of the games have received updates to prevent this problem from occurring. To minimize the likelihood of this problem occurring, make sure that you are using the latest version of your games before attempting to upgrade the operating system. We are also working on solving such problems that may arise on 20H1 Insider Preview builds, to minimize the likelihood of these problems in the future.
Some Realtek SD card readers do not work properly.
Protection against unauthorized access can be disabled in the Windows Security application after upgrading to this assembly. You can turn it on again.
There is a known issue with entering Bopomofo characters when the width of a character suddenly changes to full width with half width.
The problem is investigated when the file search in Explorer is displayed in an unexpectedly small area, and when you click on it, it crashes.
If a developer installs assemblies from the Early Access channel and switches to either Late Access or the Windows Preliminary Evaluation Program, additional content, such as turning on developer mode, will not work. To add / install / enable optional content, you need to stay on the “Early Access” channel. This is due to the fact that additional content will be installed only in assemblies approved for a specific update channel.
